Throughout high school, I never really took writing or English seriously until my
junior year. During my junior year, I took AP Lang and I started learning about rhetorical
choices and how put more focus on my writing and the writing process. However, when it
came to the AP exam I ended up scoring a 2 on it and was very disappointed. The next year,
I took AP Literature and really started focusing on perfecting my writing. Therefore, when it
came to the exam I was very confident in my writing and when I came here in the summer
for my orientation and my advisor told me to take ENC 1101, I told her I wanted to take ENC
2135 because I was confident on the score that was going to come out for AP Lit.
     During the summer, I took a history course that required me to write a lot. This
included 1500+ word research assignments and there were three of them that were worth
a majority of my grade. I was shocked when I received a 70 on the first of these major
writing assignments, because I thought I had put a lot of effort into it. This is when I started
to lock in and include more reasoning and evidence into my writing. Thankfully, the
professor allowed us to resubmit this assignment and I was able to score a 90 on it and
passed all of the rest of the writing assignment with an “A” or better. During this course, my
writing process has also improved as I have become more disciplined and have been able
to back up my ideas with research and reasoning. I have also learned to write an essay
where I only display research and refrain from including my argument. This course has also taught me that when writing I can't leave an idea by itself, but instead provide it with a line of reasoning. This is something that I struggled with a lot as I got stuck with ideas and no way to give them any reason, however, ENC 2135 has helped me provide meaning to my words and make my arguments stronger.
     For the future I hope that I can take on longer and more difficult writing
assignments. I also want to familiarize with formatting and understand a good basis of it. A
main thing I struggle with is supporting the ideas that I write down so I hope that I can get
better in this aspect. This would not only make writing easier but also ensure I get better
grades. So far, I have become quite keen with APA and MLA formatting. I also have learned how to incorporate rhetorical choices into my writing.
